My documentary work “Hackenfleisch - The Life of the Chinese in Germany” discovers the subculture of the Chinese population in Germany. During my first stay in China I had lived with Chinese families and learnt what was important to them, especially in their own private environment. I observed how people of rich and poor background fashioned their living space, and came up with the question “How do Chinese people live in Germany?” How could a person unfamiliar with their culture recognize that Chinese persons live in those places? Is it possible to recognize that at first glance? Do these living spaces here and there have something in common?
Through my quest for cultural idiosyncrasies and overlaps in their domestic environment I wanted to get as complete a basic overview as possible. I included students, temporary workers, mixed couples as well as Chinese who had settled in Germany for good. Could I recognize their backgrounds? Were there differences in their way of living, the fashioning of their new environment? The central core of this work is the realm these Chinese in Germany have created for themselves.
